The Band Toto Asia
Toto expanded its production facilities overseas, and was doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. The company saw North America as a growth market for Washlet bidet seats and toilets, as opposed to its "base" markets of Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure that the future generations could comprehend the words. Many words were substituted with foreign ones. For example dui, which is Bengali for verandah, was used.
Origins
The company was founded in 1917 and its early years mirrored Japan's economic growth. In the beginning, Toto made products to meet the growing demand for modern, brand new urban housing. To accomplish this, it employed the first tunnel kiln in the nation to make ceramics in a continuous flow. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, which allows for greater efficiency and a more consistent production.
The company began expanding internationally in the latter part of the 1980s to take advantage of new markets and sales opportunities. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other manufacturers' products to complement its own line of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy increased sales and expanded the company's market share in the world.
By the 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus on research and development for household appliances that use water. It also upgraded its system of distribution to better serve customers and improve profit. The company used the same just-in time approach in its supply chain management and sales program. This resulted in a higher level of customer satisfaction.
Toto has continued to innovate in the toilet technology. Its latest toilet has a powerful, environmentally-friendly tornado flush. Toto uses recycled water in its manufacturing process, and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets Toto manufactures bathtubs and faucets and hand dryers that are more efficient in energy use than typical models.
The first Toto museum opened in 2015. It has exhibitions on the most iconic products of Toto and their evolution, the group companies (all of which are made from ceramics) and the history of plumbing, and even bath units. In a separate gallery you can see Toto products sold all over. The museum also has a bathroom with a WASHLET as well as other toilet innovations.
Before the formation of Toto the band, members of the group performed session work for many musicians. Boz Scaggs' album Silk Degrees featured keyboardist David Paich as well as guitarists Mike Porcaro & Steve Lukather and drummer Jeff Porcaro & Steve Lukather. They also played on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
You would expect a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog band, but it is actually a fairly straight forward rock group. The band began as four members and released two albums in 1979, the self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. However, even though the group have a wide range of musical backgrounds their biggest hit was in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster, but not without its own set of issues. The record companies placed the band under pressure to deliver an album that was a success or they would rescind them. Toto was able achieve this feat with the help of the hit song "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery owes a lot to their prior experience in the music industry, as the band members were session musicians for artists such as Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts before starting the group. Their distinctive sound has since become the standard for '80s pop, and has influenced many modern artists.
The album begins with a hefty dose of hard rock with songs like Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write amazing AOR songs that slowly build their hooks into you. The album also features more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations. This song mixes folk and distorted AOR which could seem like a complete blunder, but works very well.
After Toto IV the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career, and the band had several drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band after drug charges. The band continued with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. However, the band still had a successful chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first album featuring a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet style of previous albums. It was a stronger, more constant effort with a harder edge than Hydra. The more experimental sound of Turn Back reflected the growth of the band. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing proficiency was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard skills were as well more refined, more precise, and less derivative on previous recordings.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live show that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months after and embarked on a world tour help promote the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demo tapes and tapes to make a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. The album was released as a double-album titled Then & Now in 2001. It was the band's first album that did not contain the single track "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and the vocalist Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis condition which hampered his singing. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia were in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be reformed. This lineup, minus Howe who was working with Yes during that period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had the appearance of singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
